Every year KDHX puts out a compilation of the best in-studio performances, which they give to Members who donate at a certain level. Vol. 12 of this series was special because it was the last to be recorded in the old Magnolia Ave. Studios. I thought it would be a fun idea to put together a visual "love letter" to the old space through photography.
The cover has 12 little portraits, each showing a cropped view of either a performer or the studio itself. I wasn't allowed to show any recognizable faces throughout the piece because of artist release concerns, so working within these constraints I focused on giving a sense of the space and vibe of the old studios through intricate cropping.
I was fortunate to art direct designer Joe Wright on this project, and our collaboration resulted in sorting through about 2,000 images to find the right combination for the packaging. We also collaborated to create a mix of very clean typography and red duotone images to help give unified branding throughout the piece.
